In a significant development regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that 26 nations have expressed their readiness to deploy troops as part of a peacekeeping force aimed at securing a potential ceasefire or peace agreement. These nations have made formal commitments to station troops in Ukraine or maintain a presence in the region, whether on land, at sea, or in the air, with the goal of bolstering Ukraine's security following the conclusion of hostilities.
Macron emphasized that this force does not intend to engage in military actions against Russia but is designed to safeguard peace and send a clear strategic message. The deployment will take place within the framework of a ceasefire, not along the frontline, but in areas to be determined, ensuring the prevention of any major new aggression and involving the 26 nations in the long-term security of Ukraine.
At the conclusion of discussions among the so-called coalition of willing nations in Paris, Macron indicated that political and legal preparations would commence to implement these security guarantees. However, he did not specify which countries would be contributing to this effort.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen supported Macron's statements, asserting that Ukraine must be transformed into a formidable deterrent to make it 'indigestible' for current and future aggressors.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed satisfaction with the coalition's outcomes, noting that there is consensus on the framework for security guarantees. He highlighted the crucial role of a robust Ukrainian military in this endeavor. Member nations are now preparing the necessary documentation to facilitate this initiative. Zelensky also called upon European defense manufacturers to ramp up their operations to support Ukraine's military needs, reiterating the consensus that Russia has consistently rejected any peace initiatives.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz participated virtually in the conference, indicating that Germany plans to enhance its support regarding weapon systems and air defense. A government representative stated that the German administration is also focused on assisting Ukraine's offensive capabilities, including potential support for the construction of Ukrainian long-range missiles. Germany will decide on any military engagement at an appropriate time once the conditions are clarified.
Following the discussions, there was a conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump, where the coalition sought to clarify Europe's support and the finalization of plans for Ukraine. Additionally, they urged Trump to consider providing U.S. security guarantees.
