A significant operation was carried out in Elsterwerda, where a 500-kilogram bomb from World War II was successfully defused. The bomb was discovered recently in the industrial area of the eastern part of the city, located in the Elbe-Elster district. Authorities confirmed that the bomb was safely defused and the detonator was destroyed, with the sounds of the explosion being faintly heard by residents nearby.

The discovery of the bomb prompted local officials to take immediate action to ensure the safety of the community. Approximately 800 residents were required to evacuate their homes temporarily while the bomb disposal experts carried out their work. In addition to the evacuation, several businesses in the vicinity also halted their operations during the defusing process.

The successful operation underscores the ongoing efforts to address remnants of the past, particularly unexploded ordnance that poses risks to public safety. Such finds are not uncommon in Germany, where many World War II munitions remain buried and can be unearthed during construction or renovation activities.

Officials have reiterated the importance of vigilance and reporting any suspicious findings to the authorities. The swift response from the bomb disposal team ensured that the situation was managed effectively, allowing residents to return to their homes without incident.
