Weather Forecast: A Shift in Conditions After the Current Weather Clash

Tue 11th Feb, 2025

Germany is currently experiencing a varied weather pattern, with rain, snow, cold, and mild temperatures reported across the country. As the weekend approaches, a more pronounced winter weather is expected to take hold.

The German Weather Service forecasts that northern regions will continue to face cold and wintry conditions, while southern areas may experience milder and wetter weather. This disparity is anticipated to diminish as the weekend progresses.

According to meteorological experts, the country is currently caught between two contrasting air masses. One, driven by High Elvira, is bringing cold and dry air into the northeastern parts, while Low Max is introducing milder maritime air into the southwestern regions. This battle between the two pressure systems will continue, with Low Max's warm air gradually moving northward.

On Wednesday, significant precipitation is expected, particularly at the boundary where these air masses collide. Residents can anticipate limited sunshine, with rain and snow expected in northern and eastern Germany. Temperature discrepancies are notable, with Vorpommern likely to see highs only reaching 0 degrees Celsius, contrasted by southern areas where temperatures may soar between 7 and 13 degrees Celsius, especially in the Breisgau region.

As Thursday arrives, the colder air mass is expected to take over, resulting in potential heavy snowfall in northern regions. By the morning of Thursday, the warm air from Low Max will begin to retreat, allowing the colder air from High Elvira to dominate as it pushes southward. Nevertheless, southern Germany will still experience relatively mild conditions, with temperatures ranging from 5 to 10 degrees Celsius, while the northeastern parts will struggle to exceed 0 degrees. Overcast skies will prevail, with rain falling south of the Mosel and Main rivers, and snowfall occurring in northern and eastern areas.

By Friday, snowfall is projected from the Upper Rhine to southeastern Bavaria, with increased precipitation expected in eastern regions. The weather will remain predominantly cloudy, especially in the western and northwestern parts of the country, where drier conditions are forecasted. The temperature range is expected to stabilize, falling between -1 and 4 degrees Celsius, with a slight increase to 6 degrees Celsius in the Hochrhein area.
