WDR Secures Future of Popular Münster 'Tatort' Duo with Contract Extensions

Sat 13th Dec, 2025

The broadcasting council of Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) has confirmed the continuation of the highly successful Münster edition of the 'Tatort' crime series. The broadcaster has renewed its collaboration with the lead actors Jan Josef Liefers and Axel Prahl, ensuring that audiences can look forward to more cases solved by the renowned forensic pathologist and chief inspector duo.

This strategic move follows the considerable success of the Münster 'Tatort', which has consistently achieved outstanding viewership figures in Germany. Although WDR has not disclosed the specific duration of the new contracts, the agreement guarantees that both actors will remain in their roles for the foreseeable future, much to the satisfaction of the programme's extensive fan base.

Recent episodes have underscored the show's immense popularity. The episode titled 'Die Erfindung des Rades', aired on 7 December, attracted 11.63 million viewers and reached an exceptional market share of 42.6 percent. The series continues to perform strongly among younger audiences, with a remarkable 30.1 percent market share among viewers aged 14 to 49, according to industry reports. These figures highlight the unique status of the Münster 'Tatort' team within the German television landscape.

In addition to the lead actors' contract renewals, the series recently marked the departure of a long-standing cast member. Mechthild Großmann, who has portrayed prosecutor Wilhelmine Klemm since the first Münster episode in 2002, has decided to step away from the series after almost 23 years. Known for her distinctive, deep voice, Großmann will not have her character written out through an on-screen death, a common occurrence in television dramas when actors exit a show. Instead, she will pursue other professional opportunities, expressing a desire for new roles in future projects.

The Münster edition of 'Tatort' has become a cornerstone of German crime television, regularly outperforming other regional editions in the long-running franchise. The broadcast consistently draws millions of viewers and generates significant discussion among fans and critics alike. The comedic interplay and contrasting characteristics of Liefers' and Prahl's characters have been frequently cited as contributing factors to the show's enduring appeal.

With the latest round of contract extensions, WDR is positioned to maintain its leadership in German crime programming, while providing stability for the production team and continuity for the audience. The broadcaster's commitment to the series reflects the value placed on established, high-performing entertainment in the competitive landscape of public television.

Looking ahead, Münster's 'Tatort' episodes will continue to feature new criminal cases, further developing the dynamic between the forensic expert and the chief inspector. Fans can expect more investigations set against the backdrop of Münster, maintaining the format that has proven remarkably successful over the past two decades.
