Water Damage Catastrophe Strikes Berlin Apartment

Wed 5th Mar, 2025

In a shocking incident in Berlin, a family's apartment was severely damaged when a water meter exploded from the wall, releasing a torrent of scalding water. The event occurred overnight, causing extensive flooding in the home of Jacqueline S. and her husband Manuel S.

The couple, who have been dealing with various housing issues for over a year, found themselves in a dire situation when the water meter detached, resulting in over a meter of water accumulating in their apartment. The couple expressed their relief that they were not in the bathroom at the time, as the force of the water could have caused serious injury.

Firefighters were called to the scene to shut off the water supply, but by then, the damage was already done, with the apartment left in disarray. The couple's attempts to clean up the mess the following day highlighted the magnitude of the disaster.

Jacqueline S. voiced her frustrations regarding ongoing issues in their home, particularly the persistent black mold that has plagued them for over a year. Despite multiple requests for assistance and even providing medical documentation about the health risks of mold exposure, they have not received adequate support from their property management, Gesobau.

In addition to the mold, the building's exterior shows signs of neglect, with moss growth indicating a broader moisture problem. After the recent flooding, the family was offered temporary accommodation, but they found the alternative unit to be unclean and lacking essential amenities such as a kitchen.

The couple expressed concerns about the safety of other tenants, as the same type of water meters are present in other apartments. Several residents have also reported past water damage incidents, raising alarm about the potential for further issues.

In response to the situation, Gesobau stated that they took immediate action regarding both the mold and water damage, but the family doubts the timeline for repairs, which they claim could take up to three months. The couple is demanding clarity and assurance to ensure the safety of all tenants in the building.
