Warner Bros. Shuts Down Studio Behind 'Shadow of Mordor'

Wed 26th Feb, 2025

Warner Bros. has officially announced the closure of three of its video game development studios, including Monolith Productions, the team responsible for the acclaimed titles 'Shadow of Mordor' and 'Shadow of War'.

This decision has been confirmed following a report by Bloomberg, which detailed the shutdowns of Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. San Diego. The closures are part of a broader strategy by Warner Bros. to streamline its operations and focus on a smaller portfolio of major franchises.

According to an internal memo from JB Perrette, the head of gaming, the company expressed concerns over the quality of many recent releases, indicating that they have not met expectations. He emphasized the need for a fundamental restructuring of their portfolio and team structure to allocate the necessary resources for a strategy that prioritizes fewer, larger franchises.

Warner Bros. intends to concentrate on its well-established intellectual properties, which include popular franchises such as 'Harry Potter', 'Mortal Kombat', 'Game of Thrones', and various titles within the DC Comics universe. However, the company has faced challenges even with these franchises. For instance, 'Quidditch Champions', released last year, fell short of sales expectations, while the open-world game 'Hogwarts Legacy' achieved remarkable success. Warner's endeavors in the 'Game of Thrones' realm have yet to make a significant impact in the gaming industry.

Monolith Productions, established in 1994, is particularly noted for its innovative Nemesis System, which featured prominently in the 'Middle-Earth' games. This system creates dynamic narratives by allowing players to encounter and interact with various adversaries throughout their gameplay. These encounters influence how these characters respond in future confrontations, enhancing the overall gaming experience.

Prior to its closure, Monolith was developing a game based on the character Wonder Woman, which was initially unveiled in 2021. Unfortunately, this project will also be shelved as part of the studio's dissolution.
