The disparity in wages between East and West Germany has been a persistent issue, but recent insights from the President of the Leibniz Institute for Economic Research Halle (IWH), Reint Gropp, suggest a positive outlook. Gropp believes that over the next decade, wages in East Germany will start to converge with those in the West.
During an interview with Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR), Gropp expressed optimism regarding the gradual reduction of wage inequality. He attributed this potential change to demographic trends that could influence the labor market dynamics in the region.
However, the situation regarding wealth inequality paints a different picture. Gropp highlighted that individuals in West Germany have had decades more to accumulate wealth, which has resulted in significant disparities. He emphasized that this gap in wealth is particularly concerning as it can affect entrepreneurial activities and the willingness to take financial risks.
While acknowledging the challenges, Gropp does not support targeted economic aid specifically for East Germany. Instead, he advocates for a focus on enhancing research and university initiatives to foster growth. He pointed out the lack of large companies in the East, which leads to reduced private investment in research and development. Gropp believes that directing attention towards these areas is crucial for the region's advancement.
Furthermore, Gropp argued for a shift in perception regarding East Germany, suggesting that it should no longer be viewed as a victim. He proposed the elimination of the position of the East Commissioner, asserting that East Germany should step out of this victim narrative and focus on its potential.
In summary, while there is hope for wage equality in the coming years, the wealth gap remains a significant concern that requires strategic attention and investment in research and education.
