Cologne - The Keupstraße, known for its vibrant Turkish community, is a hub for various businesses, including restaurants, cafes, and shops. This shopping street offers a wide array of culinary choices, from köfte skewers to baklava, reflecting the diverse tastes of the local population. As the Bundestag elections approach, many are curious about how this multicultural community will vote.
Ömer Aldag, a local restaurateur whose family has been part of the Keupstraße since 1985, expresses concern over the rising popularity of right-wing parties. He recalls a tragic event from 2004, when a nail bomb attack by far-right extremists injured 22 people near his restaurant. Aldag urges that asylum seekers need to receive work permits much faster to integrate into society.
He appreciates the efforts of politicians like Karl Lauterbach from the SPD, who frequently visits his establishment, and maintains a dialogue with local CDU representative Serap Güler.
Another local, Abdülkadir Üngan, is still contemplating his voting decision. Although he feels uneasy about the increasing support for the AfD, he remains uncertain about which party to support, voicing frustration over perceived inaction from all sides of the political spectrum.
In contrast, Abi, a retiree and former city employee, advocates for stricter asylum policies, stating his intention to vote for the AfD, believing they should demonstrate their capabilities if elected. His perspective, however, is met with disapproval by other patrons, who argue that voting for the AfD is shameful.
Servat Özdag, who has operated a bakery in the area for 35 years, is firmly against the AfD, citing the importance of freedom in Germany. He expresses skepticism towards the traditional parties but prefers them over any involvement from the far right.
Yussuf S., a young resident with a migration background, supports the Left Party for its open immigration policies and advocates for more financial support for the lower and middle classes. He emphasizes the need for tax reforms to ensure that citizens retain more of their earnings.
This dialogue within Cologne's Turkish community illustrates a complex landscape of opinions and concerns as the Bundestag elections draw near, highlighting the importance of understanding diverse perspectives in the political discourse.
