Volvo has revealed initial technical specifications for its upcoming battery-electric sedan, the ES90, which is set to impress with its rapid charging capabilities.
As the anticipation builds ahead of the full unveiling on March 5, the Swedish automaker, now under Chinese ownership, has offered a glimpse of what the ES90 will bring to the market. The focus on enhanced charging performance is evident, as Volvo transitions from a 400-volt to an innovative 800-volt system.
This shift allows for greater power output, adhering to the electrical principle where voltage multiplied by amperage equals wattage. The ES90's battery is designed for a maximum charging capacity of 350 kW, enabling it to recharge from 10% to 80% in just 20 minutes under optimal conditions and with suitable infrastructure.
While Volvo has not disclosed whether the battery's energy capacity of 106 kWh is measured net or gross, the manufacturer indicates that the average usable charging power could reach approximately 222.6 kW. Importantly, the company emphasizes that the 800-volt system generates less heat during the charging process, suggesting reduced energy losses compared to traditional systems.
In terms of range, the all-wheel-drive variant, equipped with dual motors and a 106-kWh battery, is expected to achieve a WLTP-rated distance of 700 kilometers on a single charge. Furthermore, Volvo claims that under ideal conditions, a mere ten minutes of charging can add enough energy for an additional 300 kilometers of travel.
It is anticipated that Volvo has invested considerable effort into ensuring optimal battery temperatures prior to charging, a strategy already employed successfully by other manufacturers such as Audi in the development of their current platforms.
The ES90 is poised to set new standards in the electric vehicle market, showcasing Volvo's commitment to innovation and performance in electrification.
