Volkswagen Leads Germany's Electric Vehicle Market

Mon 7th Jul, 2025

Volkswagen (VW) has firmly established its dominance in the German electric vehicle (EV) market, securing a market share of approximately 46% in the first half of the year. This figure marks a significant increase from just under 32% in the same period last year, as reported by data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt) analyzed by dpa.

In a distant second place is BMW, which, along with its subsidiaries Mini and Rolls-Royce, has managed to capture about 11% of the market. Tesla, which was once a strong competitor in the German market, has seen a dramatic decline, dropping to just 3.6% market share and falling to the eighth position.

VW's stronghold on the German automotive market is not surprising, as the company has consistently maintained a market share of around 40% across the overall market. However, its recent surge in the EV sector indicates a turnaround, with its performance now outpacing its previous metrics.

On a brand level, VW dominates the market with its various models, taking the top four positions, while BMW secures a narrow second place. The competition is heating up for BMW, which is now only slightly ahead of Skoda, with a margin of just 213 vehicles in the first half of the year. While BMW focuses on the premium vehicle segment, Skoda has made significant gains with its new model introductions.

When compared to its traditional rivals, Audi and Mercedes-Benz, BMW is noticeably ahead, although both brands remain several thousand units behind in sales.

In terms of specific models, the VW group continues to lead, holding the top six spots in EV sales, with the ID.7 model leading the charge. BMW's X1 comes in at seventh place, while Tesla's Model Y, which previously held a strong position, now occupies the ninth spot.

This shift in the market landscape underscores the evolving preferences of German consumers, who are increasingly opting for VW's electric offerings over those of competitors. The trend illustrates not only VW's successful adaptation to the growing demand for electric vehicles but also highlights the challenges faced by other manufacturers in keeping pace with the rapid advancements in EV technology and consumer expectations.
