The rise in violent incidents involving employees of the Deutsche Bahn has become a pressing concern, with a significant uptick in physical assaults reported in 2024. According to recent data shared by the Deutsche Bahn's leadership, approximately 3,300 physical attacks were recorded, marking an increase of nearly six percent compared to the previous year.
These assaults predominantly target personnel in direct contact with passengers, such as train conductors, cleaning staff, and customer service representatives. The CEO of Deutsche Bahn, Richard Lutz, emphasized that any form of violence against employees is utterly unacceptable, noting that around half of the reported incidents involved personnel working in regional transport.
In response to this alarming trend, Deutsche Bahn has initiated several measures to enhance the safety of its staff. Since 2024, the company has begun equipping frontline employees with body cameras on a voluntary basis, a strategy that has proven effective among security personnel. Additionally, Lutz mentioned that staff members are receiving de-escalation training to better handle potentially volatile situations. The introduction of a priority call button, known as the Prio-Ruf, in local transport services is another measure aimed at ensuring rapid assistance in emergencies.
It is important to consider that the spike in violent incidents in 2024 can be partly attributed to the increased passenger volume during the UEFA European Championship held last summer, which saw a surge in railway usage.
Furthermore, Lutz remarked that the situation reflects broader societal issues, indicating a need for collective efforts to address violence in public spaces. The Deutsche Bahn remains committed to safeguarding its employees while fostering a safer environment for both staff and passengers.
