Vinay Prasad Reinstated at FDA Following Brief Ouster

Tue 12th Aug, 2025

In a surprising turn of events, Dr. Vinay Prasad has been reinstated as the head of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, just under two weeks after his removal from the position. This announcement was confirmed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Dr. Prasad, a trained hematologist-oncologist, initially joined the Trump administration as a senior health official and was responsible for overseeing vaccines and complex biological treatments. His tenure had been marked by public scrutiny and criticism regarding the federal government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to an HHS spokesperson, Prasad is resuming his role at the request of the FDA. The spokesperson emphasized that neither the White House nor the HHS would allow media narratives to distract from the essential work of the FDA during this administration.

Dr. Prasad's removal on July 29 was attributed to backlash from certain conservative figures, notably far-right activist Laura Loomer, who opposed his approach to drug approvals and previous political statements. However, internal reviews within the White House deemed these criticisms to be unfounded.

A spokesperson from the White House articulated the necessity of maintaining a qualified team that aligns with the President's agenda, highlighting the importance of experienced staff in the administration's efforts.

The decision to reinstate Dr. Prasad followed advocacy from FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary, who asserted that the notion of Prasad being pressured to leave was inaccurate. He stated that Prasad had opted to step back due to media attention but encouraged him to reconsider his departure.

In response to the reinstatement, Loomer expressed her dissatisfaction, labeling it an unacceptable personnel decision and pledging to intensify her scrutiny of HHS and FDA officials.

It remains uncertain whether Dr. Prasad will also reclaim his previous position as the FDA's chief medical and scientific officer, which he held prior to his ouster.

The FDA plays a crucial role in the regulation and approval of vaccines and biologics, and Dr. Prasad's return is expected to contribute to the ongoing efforts in managing public health challenges.
