Continued Disruptions in Mail and Package Delivery

The ongoing labor dispute involving Deutsche Post has led the Verdi union to announce an extension of its warning strikes for an additional two days, affecting mail and package deliveries nationwide. The strikes are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, impacting employees in various sectors including letter and package delivery, as well as service locations.

Earlier this week, Verdi had called for strikes at parcel centers, followed by a day of action on Thursday involving delivery staff and service centers. The union's representatives emphasized that these actions reflect the workforce's demand for better conditions and compensation from their employer.

Demands for Wage Increases and Additional Leave

Verdi is advocating for a salary increase of seven percent within a twelve-month collective bargaining agreement that would cover approximately 170,000 postal workers, including letter carriers and parcel delivery staff. In contrast, Deutsche Post, a subsidiary of DHL, has offered a staggered pay increase over a longer 27-month period, starting with a 1.8 percent rise followed by an additional 2.0 percent.

In addition to wage increases, the union is also pushing for three extra vacation days to address the heightened workload faced by employees. Members of Verdi are seeking an even more generous offer, with four additional days proposed for union members. The company's counterproposal includes only one additional vacation day for employees who currently receive fewer than 30 days off annually, which affects about two-thirds of their workforce.

Negotiations Continue Amidst Strikes

Despite previous rounds of negotiations yielding no results, a fourth round of talks is scheduled for the upcoming week. The union has previously organized sporadic warning strikes across various departments, including both parcel and letter delivery, which have resulted in noticeable delays in service.

As the situation develops, Verdi represents the collective voice of workers who are advocating for fair treatment and improved job conditions within the postal service. The union's leadership expressed that they anticipate a more favorable offer in the next negotiation session, which they hope will lead to a resolution that meets the workforce's expectations.
