Compact electric vehicles have gained popularity due to their ability to navigate city streets effortlessly while offering low consumption rates and relatively affordable prices, particularly in the used car market. A recent analysis by AUTO BILD examines five small electric cars, highlighting their respective advantages and disadvantages.
VW e-UpThe VW e-Up was produced from 2013 to 2023, with power outputs ranging from 82 to 83 PS. The model underwent a facelift in 2020, which included a significantly larger battery, an increase in government incentives, and a reduction in the entry price, leading to a surge in registrations. With manufacturer discounts, some buyers acquired the updated e-Up for as little as EUR15,000. However, the prices for used models have not significantly dropped since then.
Key strengths include a torque of up to 212 Newton meters, making it agile despite its 1250 kg weight, comfortable seating, and a regenerative braking system with four settings. The practical consumption lies between 12 and 15 kWh. The vehicle also features four doors for added convenience.
However, it is essential to note that some charging issues were partially resolved through software updates, but there are still reports of failures in the charging unit, with replacement costs potentially reaching EUR3,000 or more. Used charging units are available starting around EUR200.
Used VW e-Up models can be found from approximately EUR11,500 (36.8 kWh battery).
Renault ZoeProduced from 2012 to 2024, the Renault Zoe offers power outputs between 77 and 135 PS. The vehicle has gained traction in Germany, partly due to its optional battery rental, which lowers initial purchase prices. Older models with battery leasing options can be found for as low as EUR5,000, with rental costs varying between EUR65 and EUR120 monthly based on annual mileage. Renault also allows buyers to acquire batteries after purchase.
Models equipped with a 22 kWh battery start at EUR6,900, while those with a 42 kWh battery are priced around EUR9,500, and the 50 kWh versions are available at around EUR12,000.
While the battery performance tends to be robust, early models may exhibit lower quality in terms of materials and failures in the motor and power electronics.
Used Renault Zoe vehicles can be found from around EUR6,500 (including battery).
Dacia SpringThe Dacia Spring has been in production since 2021, with power options of 45 or 65 PS. The top-end model is priced from EUR19,900 new, but nearly new variants with less than 1,000 km can be found for less than EUR16,000. Early versions with 44 PS can be acquired for around EUR9,500, while the more powerful 65 PS version starts at approximately EUR13,500.
While it is an affordable electric vehicle, potential buyers should be cautious about the car's condition, as poor treatment by previous owners can lead to rapid deterioration. Rushing to buy may lead to rust issues, with only a six-year warranty on certain components.
Used Dacia Spring models may be available from around EUR9,500 (45 PS version).
Fiat 500eLaunched in 2020, the Fiat 500e serves as the electric successor to the classic Fiat 500. While it features slight increases in dimensions, interior space remains cramped. The vehicle boasts a small turning radius of 9.8 meters and offers impressive acceleration, with top speeds reaching 150 km/h when equipped with the larger battery. Charging capabilities are also noteworthy, allowing for rapid charging at up to 85 kW.
Prices for the 118 PS version with a 37.3 kWh battery start from EUR12,500.
However, electronic issues, such as error messages and unexpected shutdowns, have been reported, alongside mechanical concerns like noisy suspensions and water ingress in convertible models.
Used Fiat 500e models can be found starting from approximately EUR12,000 (95 PS version).
Smart EQ ForfourManufactured between 2017 and 2021, the Smart EQ Forfour is characterized by a smaller battery and limited winter range of under 100 km, making it suitable primarily for short-distance travel. While the electric version provides significant advantages in terms of weight distribution and ride comfort, its compact size limits overall space and comfort.
In terms of pricing, used Smart EQ Forfour vehicles are available from around EUR7,500.
When purchasing a used model, it is advisable to seek those with a fresh inspection certificate, as previous owners' treatment can heavily influence the vehicle's longevity.
