Diplomatic Tensions Rise as South Sudan Faces US Visa Restrictions

Thu 10th Apr, 2025

Recent diplomatic tensions between the United States and South Sudan have escalated following Juba's refusal to accept the deportation of a man from the US. The individual in question was believed to be a South Sudanese national but was later identified by South Sudanese authorities as a citizen of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticized South Sudan for this refusal, claiming the country was exploiting the US immigration system. He emphasized that nations are required to accept their citizens when the US seeks to deport them. As a result, the US has initiated a revocation of all visas held by South Sudanese passport holders, a decision that Rubio stated would be reevaluated once South Sudan demonstrates full cooperation.

The current political climate in South Sudan is fraught with instability, with President Salva Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar's joint transitional government, formed in 2020, nearing a potential collapse. Violence has surged between government forces and opposition factions, further complicating the humanitarian situation.

The US's decision to revoke visas has raised alarm among South Sudanese nationals in the US, many of whom are protected under Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a program designed to shield individuals from deportation due to unsafe conditions in their home countries. Critics of the US's actions argue that this move undermines humanitarian principles that have historically distinguished the US from other nations.

Analysts have pointed out that South Sudan, as a developing country, should not be penalized for the actions of one individual. They argue that the US's hardline stance, which has extended even to its allies, places undue pressure on smaller nations that may struggle to respond effectively.

In response to the situation, South Sudanese officials have maintained that they have cooperated with all other deportation requests and described the case as isolated. After initially refusing entry to the individual, South Sudan later granted him permission to enter the country, citing the importance of maintaining friendly relations with the US.

The implications of the US's visa restrictions could be far-reaching. Beyond the approximately 100 South Sudanese individuals under TPS, many athletes, including those who have competed successfully in international events, may find their opportunities severely limited. This includes members of the South Sudanese basketball team and other professionals pursuing careers in the US.

Local representatives from North Carolina have expressed their concern, urging the US government to reconsider the visa revocation, emphasizing that South Sudanese visa holders contribute positively to their communities and should not be punished for the current political tensions.

As the situation continues to unfold, the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that respects the humanitarian needs of South Sudanese nationals while addressing the concerns of the US government.
