U.S. Military Suffers Another Loss in Red Sea Operations

Wed 7th May, 2025

In a recent incident, the U.S. military has reportedly lost another fighter jet in the Red Sea, as confirmed by a CNN report. The F/A-18 Super Hornet, which was operating from the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman, encountered difficulties during landing, leading to the aircraft crashing into the sea. Fortunately, the pilot and the weapons systems officer managed to eject safely and were rescued with minor injuries.

This incident marks the second loss of an F/A-18 Super Hornet within a week. Previously, another jet of the same model fell from the USS Harry S. Truman after becoming detached while being towed. Each of these advanced fighter jets carries an estimated price tag of around $70 million.

According to reports by AFP, this latest mishap brings the total number of F/A-18 losses for the U.S. military to three in just a few months. The previous incident involved a jet that was accidentally shot down by the guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg in December.

The USS Harry S. Truman is currently deployed in the Red Sea as part of operations aimed at countering the Houthi militia from Yemen. The U.S. military has been conducting airstrikes from two aircraft carriers in the region to impair the Houthi's capacity to launch attacks against commercial vessels traversing the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

In a surprising development, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the Houthi militia has capitulated to U.S. demands, leading to a ceasefire agreement mediated by Oman. Despite this claim, the Houthis have reiterated their commitment to supporting the Palestinian cause and have vowed to continue their stance against Israel.

As tensions in the region remain high, the U.S. military's ongoing operations highlight the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in the Red Sea area. The loss of these fighter jets raises questions about the safety and effectiveness of military engagements amid these challenges.
