A disturbing case has emerged in New York, where a cryptocurrency investor from the United States is accused of abducting and torturing an Italian tourist in an effort to steal his Bitcoin. Law enforcement officials revealed that the 37-year-old suspect allegedly held the 28-year-old tourist captive in a Manhattan apartment for several weeks, beginning on May 6.
According to reports, the accused, along with an accomplice, confiscated the victim's electronic devices and subjected him to physical abuse while threatening his life to extract the password for his Bitcoin wallet. The situation escalated to the point where the victim was reportedly dangled from a fifth-floor balcony as part of the intimidation tactics.
After managing to escape and alerting the authorities, the main suspect was apprehended, along with a suspected accomplice. Authorities confirmed that the three individuals involved had a longstanding business relationship prior to this incident.
During the captivity, the victim endured severe mistreatment, including threats to his life and those of his family. Allegations include physical assaults, electric shocks, and the use of an Apple AirTag to monitor his movements and prevent escape attempts. Following his ordeal, the victim was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Reports indicate that the main suspect possesses a fortune estimated at around $100 million, while the victim's cryptocurrency assets are valued at approximately $30 million. Evidence collected from the crime scene included Polaroid photographs depicting the torture, torture instruments, and a firearm.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of violent crimes associated with cryptocurrency, which has seen a rise in kidnappings and extortion, particularly in France, where multiple individuals linked to cryptocurrencies have faced similar threats and violence.
