U.S. Geographic Names Adjusted Following Presidential Directive

Tue 28th Jan, 2025

The names of two geographic locations in the United States are set to change as a result of a recent executive order issued by President Donald Trump. The Gulf of Mexico will now be referred to as the Gulf of America, and Denali, one of the tallest mountains in the world located in Alaska, will revert to its historical name, Mount McKinley.

In compliance with this directive, Google Maps is updating its services to reflect these new designations. According to Google's news team on social media, the company will align its maps with the U.S. Geological Survey's Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). This means that when the GNIS updates the names, Google will also make corresponding updates in its mapping service. However, it is important to note that these changes will only be visible to users within the United States. Google typically displays the officially recognized name for a location based on the user's country, and in some cases, both names may be shown.

The renaming initiative is part of a broader set of campaign promises made by Trump. While changing a location's name domestically is generally straightforward, the order specifies that the new names will apply only within the continental United States. The Gulf of Mexico has been known by this name since the 16th century. Response from Mexico regarding the name change has been measured. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has indicated a desire to avoid conflict but noted that the U.S. was once referred to as America Mexicana, suggesting that a return to that name could also be considered.

Denali, meanwhile, has undergone several name changes throughout its history. Originally named after a Native Alaskan term, it was later named after a gold miner and subsequently for U.S. President William McKinley, who was assassinated shortly after his reelection. In 1975, the mountain was renamed Denali, which reflects its original name used by the indigenous people. Official recognition of this name occurred in 2015 under the Obama administration, marking a significant return to its roots after nearly a decade of debate.
