Steffen Baumgart, the head coach of 1. FC Union Berlin, has expressed strong discontent regarding a recent yellow card he received during a match against Eintracht Frankfurt. This infraction marked his fourth caution of the season, resulting in his suspension for the upcoming Bundesliga match against league leaders Bayern Munich.
Baumgart's frustration is directed at the German Football Association (DFB) for what he perceives as an excessive disciplinary measure. He described the yellow card system implemented in the 2019/20 season as 'completely nonsensical.' He believes that the DFB lacks the necessary understanding of the dynamics and pressures coaches face during matches, particularly in challenging situations.
The coach highlighted that it has become increasingly common for coaches to be suspended more frequently than players, indicating a troubling trend in the league. Baumgart's previous cautions this season were accrued while he was managing Hamburger SV, but the latest yellow card was issued following a disagreement with the fourth official, Patrick Schwengers, during the closely contested match.
During the match, Baumgart was perplexed by the decision to issue him a yellow card, stating that he was unaware of the reason behind it. He acknowledged that he had become visibly agitated towards the end of the game due to a contentious free-kick decision made by referee Frank Willenborg, which may have contributed to the official's decision to caution him.
Despite the frustrations, Baumgart noted that the referees have generally treated him well, suggesting that the linesman may have been protective of him during the incident. The coach's comments reflect a broader concern among coaching staff within the league regarding the implications of strict disciplinary measures on their ability to manage their teams effectively.
