In a significant shift in agricultural policy, the Union has announced a 100-day action plan aimed at revitalizing the farming sector just weeks before the new government takes office. The Ministry of Agriculture is set to be led once again by the CSU, marking a return to a more conservative approach in agricultural governance.
The proposed plan, which has been shared in advance with select media outlets, outlines several key initiatives geared toward reversing measures implemented by the outgoing Minister Cem Özdemir of the Green Party. Among the foremost actions is the reinstatement of subsidies for agricultural diesel, which had sparked widespread protests among farmers due to previous cuts.
Additionally, the plan aims to streamline wildlife management by facilitating the process for culling wolves. To achieve this, the Union intends to amend EU regulations to align national laws with their proposed changes, thereby easing restrictions on wolf populations.
Another contentious point from Özdemir's tenure was the ban on advertising unhealthy food products. The Union's action plan includes a complete revocation of this ban, signaling a shift towards promoting personal responsibility and consumer choice in dietary options.
Furthermore, the Union proposes a comprehensive reform of fertilizer regulations, emphasizing the dual objectives of safeguarding water quality while minimizing bureaucratic hurdles. A notable proposal includes the elimination of the current nutrient balance regulation, which is seen as overly burdensome for farmers.
In a bid to reduce administrative burdens, the action plan outlines plans to revise the Agricultural Statistics Act, potentially resulting in cost savings of approximately EUR90 million. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the operational efficiency of the agricultural sector.
Steffen Bilger, the deputy leader of the Union faction in the Bundestag, expressed optimism about the proposed changes. He emphasized that the action plan is designed to alleviate restrictions on farmers, enhance practical viability, and provide financial relief, thereby fostering a more conducive environment for agricultural operations.
The Union's 100-day plan signals a decisive pivot from the policies of the previous administration, reflecting a commitment to more traditional agricultural practices and a focus on the immediate needs of the farming community.
