UK and France Consider Deployment of 30,000 Peacekeepers in Ukraine

Sun 23rd Feb, 2025

The ongoing discussions regarding the potential deployment of peacekeeping forces in Ukraine have gained momentum as British and French officials outline plans that could see as many as 30,000 troops sent to the region, contingent on a ceasefire agreement between Moscow and Kyiv.

Recent reports indicate that the plan is being formulated in light of a potential deal between the warring nations. The strategy involves enticing U.S. President Donald Trump to assume a limited military role, serving as a safeguard for European troops and ensuring compliance from Russia regarding any ceasefire terms.

Upcoming talks between British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and President Macron with Trump aim to clarify the U.S. position on this proposal. Starmer is expected to discuss the evolving plan without making immediate requests for American military assistance, while Macron's meeting with Trump coincides with the anniversary of Russia's invasion in 2022.

Should the plan proceed, it would not entail the direct involvement of U.S. troops on the ground in Ukraine, a stance that the Trump administration has largely dismissed. Instead, the proposal focuses on leveraging U.S. military capabilities that are currently lacking in European forces. For instance, American air defense systems could be strategically positioned in neighboring countries to cover significant areas of Ukraine, while other military assets might be allocated to European forces to enhance their operational readiness.

Moreover, the U.S. Air Force could be placed on standby to intervene if necessary, providing a crucial layer of security for the peacekeeping mission.

However, the success of this European initiative hinges on the backing of the U.S. administration. Trump's National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz, has acknowledged the discussions surrounding European-led security guarantees, emphasizing the importance of increased support from European nations.

The situation continues to develop as diplomatic efforts intensify, and the international community remains watchful of the potential implications for regional stability and security.
