Trial Delayed Following Assault on Police Officer in Berlin

Thu 13th Feb, 2025

A trial related to an assault on a police officer in Berlin's Buckow district has been postponed due to the illness of the accused, a member of a prominent crime family. The hearing, initially scheduled to take place at the Tiergarten District Court, is now expected to commence in June.

The incident occurred during the New Year's Eve celebrations of 2023/2024, following a traffic accident involving a family member of the defendant. Reports indicate that the 21-year-old man allegedly reacted violently after his 15-year-old relative was struck by a police vehicle while crossing the street near a controversial family residence.

According to court documents, the police vehicle had its sirens and flashing lights activated at the time of the incident. Following the accident, the defendant reportedly approached the police car and forcefully opened the door, subsequently assaulting an officer by striking her in the head and face multiple times. The charges against him include assaulting law enforcement officers, bodily harm, and resisting arrest.

After the young girl was hit by the police car, she was transported to a hospital for treatment. The accused was restrained by multiple police officers to prevent him from continuing his assault on the officer, who sustained significant bruising and was unable to work for an extended period.

The officer involved in the case is expected to testify in court, where she will also act as a co-plaintiff in the proceedings. Her legal representation has indicated that the trial is tentatively set to begin on June 26.

The incident has drawn attention to broader issues concerning crime and public safety in Berlin, particularly regarding the so-called 'clan crime' phenomenon, which critics argue unfairly stigmatizes individuals based on their family background.
