Stuttgart - The trial against Sulaiman Ataee, a 25-year-old accused of murdering a police officer, commenced on Wednesday at the Stuttgart Higher Regional Court. The Afghan national faces charges of murder and five counts of attempted murder related to a violent incident that occurred in Mannheim in May 2024.

One of the victims, Konrad S., aged 55, was severely injured during the stabbing attack. He has voiced a strong opinion regarding the sentencing, stating that the assailant should receive the harshest possible punishment, including life imprisonment followed by preventive detention. He expressed concerns about the possibility of Ataee returning to Germany if he were deported to Afghanistan.

On May 31, 2024, Michael Stürzenberger, a controversial critic of Islam, along with members of the civic movement Pax Europa, gathered in Mannheim for a public demonstration. As they prepared to commence their rally, Ataee, who is believed to have ties to the Islamic State, suddenly drew a large knife and attacked Stürzenberger.

Konrad S., serving as a security volunteer at the event, attempted to intervene and was subsequently assaulted by the assailant. He was one of four individuals who sustained injuries from Ataee's attacks. Additionally, the attacker fatally wounded police officer Rouven Laur, aged 29, who succumbed to his injuries shortly after being hospitalized, leading to national mourning.

Following the incident, Konrad S. was admitted to the hospital with multiple stab wounds, including a significant abdominal injury and a severe leg injury that required extensive surgical intervention. He suffered a brain infarction as a result of the attack and underwent five surgeries to address his critical condition.

Reflecting on his experience, S. recounted a moment post-surgery when a doctor informed him that while he had survived, he would need to wear a leg brace for an extended period. He later learned that medical staff had to perform resuscitation to save his life.

Konrad S. became acquainted with Michael Stürzenberger's ideology after discovering videos online in 2021. He subsequently attended numerous rallies, assisting with their organization and security.

Despite Stürzenberger's legal troubles, including multiple convictions for incitement, he remains a prominent figure among critics of Islam. His activities were under observation by the Bavarian Office for the Protection of the Constitution until 2022 due to concerns over his inflammatory rhetoric.

Konrad S. expressed ongoing physical discomfort from his injuries, which have severely impacted his daily life and ability to engage in sports. Although he received a minor compensation payment, he has struggled to find new employment since losing his job due to the attack.
