Tresor Club Remains Open Amid Misleading Reports of Closure

Thu 10th Apr, 2025

The iconic Berlin techno venue, Tresor, has confirmed its continued operation despite recent rumors suggesting its impending closure. This misinformation emerged in connection with the annual ranking published by DJ Mag, which listed the world's top 100 clubs. The absence of Tresor from this year's list led to speculation about its future.

Dimitri Hegemann, the founder of Tresor, categorically denied the rumors, labeling them as 'fake news' following a wave of media reports, including coverage from major outlets. Hegemann clarified that Tresor is not closing, emphasizing that he had no communication with DJ Mag regarding the ranking.

In response to the confusion, DJ Mag has since corrected its previous statements, publicly acknowledging that the claim about Tresor's closure was incorrect. The original text suggested that the club's exclusion from the ranking might signify a quiet end for one of the most influential techno venues worldwide. However, this has now been amended, reinforcing that Tresor will continue to operate.

The DJ Mag ranking, while generating significant media buzz, has drawn criticism for its validity. Many in the industry argue that such lists are largely subjective and reflect the preferences of magazine readers who vote for their favorite clubs online. DJ Mag promotes engagement by encouraging clubs to campaign for votes, providing promotional materials for this purpose.

This year, the renowned Berlin club Berghain has also seen a shift in its ranking, falling from 13th to 16th place, with only one German club making it into the top ten--Bootshaus in Cologne, which ranked seventh, down from fifth last year.

While these rankings can create excitement and interest, industry insiders often view them with skepticism, acknowledging that the methodology and voting process may not truly represent the diversity and vibrancy of the club scene. The focus on popular opinion and reader votes can overshadow the unique contributions of many lesser-known venues.

The ongoing debate surrounding the relevance of such club rankings highlights the dynamic nature of the nightlife industry in Berlin, where changes in public perception and operational realities are constant. As Tresor continues to thrive, it remains a vital part of Berlin's cultural fabric, celebrating the city's rich electronic music heritage.
