In a shocking turn of events in Newark, New Jersey, a 14-year-old has allegedly opened fire on police officers, resulting in the death of one officer and leaving another in critical condition. The incident occurred on a Friday evening around 6:37 PM, near the intersection of Broadway and Carteret Street, close to several fast-food establishments where the young suspect was reportedly part of a larger group.
According to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, the minor discharged his weapon approximately 29 times at the two responding officers. The motive for this violent outburst remains unclear, and authorities are investigating the circumstances leading to the shooting. Reports indicate that a backpack was recovered from the scene, which may serve as evidence related to the incident. It is suggested that the shooting may have followed a police encounter with the juvenile.
Witnesses in the area expressed their disbelief and shock over the rapid escalation of violence. One local resident described hearing a series of gunshots, initially mistaking them for fireworks, which are commonly set off in the neighborhood. The chaotic scene quickly transformed as police vehicles arrived at the location, and law enforcement began securing the area for evidence collection.
Both officers were immediately transported to a nearby hospital; however, one officer, aged 25, succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. The second officer is reported to be fighting for his life, as noted in an official statement from the New Jersey police department.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy took to social media to express his condolences and to urge the community to pray for the injured officers and their families, along with all law enforcement personnel who risk their lives to protect the public.
As for the 14-year-old shooter, conflicting reports have emerged regarding his fate. While some sources claim he was apprehended along with other suspects, other reports suggest that he may have died in the incident. The investigation is ongoing, and more information is expected to be released as authorities continue to piece together the events that led to this tragic situation.
