A devastating rocket attack in Sumy, a city located in northeastern Ukraine, has resulted in the deaths of at least 31 individuals, including two children. This incident occurred as residents were en route to church services on Palm Sunday, a significant day in the Christian calendar commemorating Jesus Christ's entry into Jerusalem.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his condolences to the victims' families via a social media platform, emphasizing the tragic nature of the attack. In addition to the fatalities, over 80 people sustained injuries, many of whom are also children. Zelenskyy assured that all necessary medical assistance would be provided to the injured.
The assault, described as horrific by Zelenskyy, involved Russian ballistic missiles targeting the city center. Reports indicate that people were struck while walking on the streets, driving in vehicles, or using public transportation. The Ukrainian Interior Minister, Ihor Klymenko, confirmed widespread injuries and damage, highlighting the chaos that ensued in the aftermath of the strike.
Images from the scene depicted lifeless bodies on the streets alongside burning vehicles, showcasing the extensive destruction caused by the attack. Local authorities have activated a crisis management team to respond to the emergency and assess the damage, which has affected roads, residential buildings, and educational institutions.
Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Andriy Sybiha, condemned the attack as a war crime, labeling it as an act of extreme evil on a day of significant religious observance. He, along with President Zelenskyy, called for a robust international response to Russia's aggression. Sybiha criticized Russia for disregarding a recent proposal from the United States aimed at establishing a ceasefire in Ukraine.
He emphasized that rather than seeking peace, Russia has intensified its acts of terror against Ukraine. Sybiha urged Western allies to bolster Ukraine's air defense capabilities and to increase pressure on Moscow, asserting that strength is the only language the aggressor understands.
Sumy has been subjected to repeated attacks throughout the ongoing conflict, which has persisted for over three years as Ukraine defends itself against the Russian invasion.
