Salzburg, Austria - A tragic incident unfolded during an ascent of the Großglockner, Austria's highest peak at 3,798 meters, when a 33-year-old woman succumbed to the extreme cold just 50 meters from the summit. Her partner, aged 36, attempted to seek help but was unable to save her in time.

The couple embarked on their alpine journey early on Saturday morning, equipped with professional mountaineering gear, departing from a parking area in Kals am Großglockner. Their intended route included scaling the Stüdlgrat to the Großglockner and returning via the Kleinglockner. However, the expedition took a dire turn.

As they progressed, the pair faced significant physical and technical challenges, causing their ascent to slow down considerably. Despite the growing difficulties and the encroaching darkness, they chose to continue their climb.

According to a spokesperson from the Tirol police, the woman reached a point of exhaustion approximately 50 meters below the summit and could not proceed. Her partner then made the decision to leave her temporarily and venture alone to seek assistance.

He managed to reach the Adlersruhe hut, where he was able to call for emergency services. The alpine rescue team from Kals and local police set out on foot to reach them, as adverse weather conditions prevented a helicopter rescue at that time.

By 10:10 AM, the rescuers arrived at the site where the woman was located, but unfortunately, she had already passed away. Medical personnel confirmed that the cause of death was hypothermia.

Details regarding the surviving partner's condition and statements remain limited, as he has not yet provided information to the authorities. The Großglockner remains a sought-after destination for climbers and is one of the most recognized peaks in the Alps, drawing many adventurers each year.
