Trechtingshausen, Rhineland-Palatinate - A tragic accident claimed the lives of a 74-year-old couple when their car collided with a truck on Tuesday afternoon. The couple was traveling on Federal Road 9 towards Trechtingshausen in the Mainz-Bingen district when the incident occurred.

According to initial police investigations, the husband attempted to overtake another vehicle but failed to notice an oncoming truck. It appears that he may not have had a clear view of the road due to a bend, leading to a catastrophic miscalculation.

The truck driver, aged 51, attempted to evade the collision by steering to the right towards the guardrail. However, the couple's small car, an Opel, struck the truck head-on. The impact was so severe that the front of the Opel was completely destroyed, with debris scattered across the roadway.

The collision occurred when the couple's vehicle struck the left side of the truck, causing it to be knocked off course. The couple, unfortunately, did not survive the crash, with emergency services confirming that they died at the scene.

In the aftermath of the accident, the woman who was driving the vehicle that was overtaken suffered from shock, while the truck driver was taken to a nearby hospital with multiple contusions.

The accident led to the complete closure of the B9 in both directions for several hours as authorities conducted their investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.

The police are currently working to establish the precise details of the accident as they continue their inquiries.
