Tue 11th Mar, 2025

The Bundespolizei (Federal Police) has launched a series of raids in connection with a violent incident involving football fans traveling to a third-division match. The operation, which took place early in the morning, targeted the residences of 31 suspects across Nordrhein-Westfalen and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, as well as a location in Berlin and one in Brandenburg.

This investigation stems from an assault on a special train carrying supporters of Hansa Rostock and Rot-Weiss Essen on October 26, 2024. The train, which was transporting hundreds of fans, was brought to a halt by an emergency brake near Gransee in Brandenburg. Following this, masked assailants launched an attack on the stationary train, resulting in the shattering of several windows and confrontations outside the carriages.

According to the Bundespolizei, the investigation is focused on allegations of serious breaches of the peace, aggravated assault, and property damage, as well as dangerous interference with railway operations. It has been established that the fans from both clubs had deliberately arranged to meet for this confrontation.

The police have described the assailants as organized, highlighting the premeditated nature of the attack. The ongoing investigation aims to hold those responsible accountable and to prevent further incidents involving football-related violence.

Football fan violence has been a growing concern in Germany, prompting authorities to increase their efforts in monitoring and controlling such activities. The latest incident underscores the need for continued vigilance and enforcement of regulations to ensure the safety of all spectators during sporting events.
