In a tragic incident in Uppsala, Sweden, a sixteen-year-old has been taken into custody on suspicion of murder after a shooting at a local hair salon resulted in the deaths of three young individuals. Authorities announced the arrest during a press conference on Wednesday.
The shooting occurred on Tuesday afternoon, around 5 PM, at a hair salon located near the Uppsala train station. Initial reports indicate that the victims, all aged between 15 and 20, have not yet been fully identified. However, it has been suggested that two of the deceased were customers at the salon, reportedly still wearing their salon capes at the time of the incident.
Eyewitnesses recounted hearing multiple gunshots. One local resident described hearing two distinct shots in quick succession, followed by several more. In the vicinity of the salon, police discovered shell casings, which further underscores the violent nature of the event.
The police have initiated an extensive investigation, conducting interviews with witnesses and executing search warrants in connection with the case. The lead prosecutor stated that the investigation is ongoing, with efforts focused on analyzing seized mobile phones and other relevant materials.
Uppsala has gained notoriety for being a hub of violent crime in Sweden, often linked to gang activity. Notably, the city is associated with Rawa Majid, known as the 'Kurdish Fox', who leads the 'Foxtrott' gang. This gang has reportedly strengthened its position among rival factions in Sweden, despite Majid's continued absence from the country.
While Sweden has faced a troubling increase in gun violence, recent data suggests a decline in such incidents. In 2024, there were 296 reported shootings across the country, resulting in 44 fatalities and 66 injuries. This marks a decrease from 2023, which saw 54 fatalities from shootings and 108 injuries.
In the wake of this violent event, political leaders have expressed their dismay. Sweden's Minister for Economic Affairs, hailing from Uppsala, has stated that the government is in close communication with relevant authorities regarding the situation. The Minister of Justice described the incident as 'extremely serious' and has assured that the ministry is attentively monitoring developments.
Despite the recent tragedy, plans for a large public celebration in Uppsala, marking the arrival of spring, are set to continue. The Walpurgis Night event, which is anticipated to attract tens of thousands of attendees, will proceed with heightened security measures in response to the incident. The police have pledged a significant presence to ensure safety during the festivities.
