Suspicions of New Undersea Cable Damage Prompt Swedish Investigations

Fri 21st Feb, 2025

Sweden is currently investigating suspected damage to an undersea cable in the Baltic Sea, as confirmed by the Swedish Coast Guard. The cable, believed to be part of the C-Lion 1 link between Rostock, Germany, and Helsinki, Finland, has reportedly suffered damage in Sweden's exclusive economic zone near Gotland. This incident marks the third reported damage to this particular cable within a few months.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has acknowledged the situation, stating that he learned about the potential cable damage through media reports. He emphasized the seriousness of any infrastructure damage in the Baltic Sea, especially given the current security concerns in the region.

The Swedish Coast Guard has dispatched a vessel to the location of the suspected damage to assess the situation further. Reports indicate that there has been a pattern of undersea cable disruptions in the Baltic Sea recently, with several incidents raising suspicions of possible sabotage.

In multiple cases over recent months, damages to communication cables and electrical lines have been reported. While the exact causes of these disruptions remain undetermined, there are concerns that passing ships may have unintentionally or intentionally damaged these cables with their anchors. During investigations, certain vessels have been held for extended periods, although they were ultimately released.

There are growing fears that Russian entities may be linked to some of these incidents. Specifically, it has been suggested that Russia's so-called "shadow fleet," which consists of tankers and cargo ships with opaque ownership structures, might be involved in the cable damage reported in December. This fleet has been suspected of circumventing EU sanctions imposed due to its ongoing military actions in Ukraine. Despite the EU's sanctions on numerous vessels associated with this fleet, it is believed that many more operate beyond the EU's regulatory reach.

As investigations proceed, the Swedish authorities remain vigilant regarding any further implications for maritime security in the Baltic Sea. The situation continues to evolve, with potential ramifications for both national security and international relations in the region.
