Survey Reveals Persistent Complaints of Slow Internet Among Businesses

Tue 11th Mar, 2025

In a recent survey conducted by the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK), a significant number of companies have reported ongoing issues with slow internet speeds, highlighting a critical barrier to their operations. The study, which surveyed 5,381 firms across Germany, found that despite substantial investments in fast fiber-optic connections and 5G technology, only 73% of businesses felt that the current availability of high-speed internet met their needs. This figure represents a slight decline of one percentage point compared to the previous two years.

Volker Treier, a key member of the DIHK executive management, emphasized the necessity for faster internet and greater bandwidth to cater to business demands. He illustrated the severity of the issue with the example of a medium-sized manufacturing company unable to back up its operational data online, resorting instead to physically transporting hard drives.

Treier pointed out that the advancement of digitalization in companies is closely tied to the expansion of fiber-optic networks into buildings and the comprehensive availability of modern mobile networks. He indicated that the existing pace of network expansion struggles to keep up with the increasing demands from businesses, particularly those requiring cloud solutions and artificial intelligence, which necessitate higher bandwidth.

The DIHK has raised concerns about bureaucratic hurdles complicating the rollout of fiber-optic infrastructure. A widely accepted industry standard for the cost-effective installation of fiber-optic cables is not being recognized by numerous regional permitting authorities. Many local building offices continue to impose unnecessary depth requirements for fiber-optic installations, inflating costs and delaying progress.

Treier urged for a comprehensive approach to network expansion, advocating for a future-oriented administrative framework that reduces bureaucracy and fosters an environment conducive to innovative applications of artificial intelligence. The survey revealed that 38% of businesses are already utilizing AI technologies, marking an increase of eleven percentage points from the previous year, while another 32% plan to implement AI solutions in the next three years.

The findings from this survey shed light on the critical need for improved internet infrastructure in Germany, reinforcing the call for both public and private sectors to collaborate in addressing these challenges to enhance the digital landscape for businesses.
