A significant chapter in retail history comes to a close as one of Germany's oldest department stores, established 146 years ago, prepares to shut its doors for good. The store, located in Ulm, has faced mounting challenges in the current economic climate, leading to its impending closure.
Originally founded by Carl Abt in 1879, the store evolved into a notable retailer specializing in household goods, gifts, and decorative items. Over the years, it expanded to include branches in Ravensburg and Günzburg, but the flagship location in Ulm has been the heart of its operations.
In 2018, the store was rescued from bankruptcy by the Müller drugstore chain, which aimed to revitalize the business model. Despite these efforts, the store has not been able to remain viable in the face of changing market dynamics.
On July 22, 2025, Müller announced that the department store would close on January 15, 2026, as part of a strategic shift back to its core business. In a statement, the company expressed its respect for the long-standing significance of the Abt store to the Ulm community and acknowledged the contributions of its employees and customers over the decades.
The store, which has undergone several transformations throughout its history, will cease operations, marking the end of an era for a retail establishment that has been a staple in Ulm for generations. Currently, the store employs 47 individuals, many of whom have dedicated their careers to the establishment. The announcement of the closure has reportedly been met with shock and sadness among staff, highlighting the emotional impact of the decision.
Müller has indicated that it will seek to provide new opportunities for affected employees within its company wherever possible. Additionally, the company plans to find a successor for the store's premises to ensure the continued use of the historical site.
