Recent research indicates a significant increase in invasive group A streptococcal infections across the United States, as highlighted in a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The rate of these severe infections has more than doubled from 2013 to 2022, escalating from approximately 4 cases per 100,000 individuals to 8 per 100,000.
Invasive group A strep infections occur when the bacteria invade parts of the body that are typically free of germs, such as the bloodstream or lungs. Unlike the more common strep throat, these infections can lead to life-threatening conditions including necrotizing fasciitis, commonly referred to as flesh-eating disease, and toxic shock syndrome. Medical experts warn that deterioration can happen rapidly, with patients transitioning from flu-like symptoms to requiring intensive care within a mere 24 to 48 hours.
The study analyzed data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), focusing on 10 states that collectively represent around 35 million individuals. The findings revealed a stark increase in cases, with 1,082 recorded in 2013 compared to 2,759 in 2022. Over this period, more than 21,000 cases were documented, resulting in nearly 2,000 deaths. Experts estimate that the total number of fatalities nationwide could exceed 10,000.
Researchers attribute the spike in infections to several factors, including a rise in chronic conditions such as diabetes and obesity that compromise immune systems. Additionally, there has been an alarming increase in infections among vulnerable populations, particularly those experiencing homelessness or substance use disorders. In 2022, the infection rate among the homeless was recorded at an unprecedented 807 cases per 100,000.
Furthermore, the study notes that the characteristics of streptococcal strains are evolving. New variants appear to be more effective at causing skin infections rather than just throat infections, and some strains are developing resistance to commonly used antibiotics.
The highest rates of invasive strep infections were found among adults aged 65 and older, although there were increases across all adult age groups. Interestingly, while the overall infection rate among children did not show a significant increase, medical professionals report observing more severe cases and unusual presentations in pediatric patients.
Experts stress the need for further research to ascertain the underlying causes of this upward trend in strep infections and to determine whether these strains are becoming increasingly virulent. The development of a vaccine is seen as a critical need; however, progress has been hindered by recent regulatory changes at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Medical professionals express concern that the lack of an effective vaccine is detrimental to public health efforts. The ongoing rise in dangerous strep infections highlights an urgent need for comprehensive strategies to address this growing threat.
