Sudan Market Attack Leaves Over 50 Dead Amid Ongoing Conflict

Sun 2nd Feb, 2025

In a tragic incident in Omdurman, a suburb of Khartoum, Sudan, a market was targeted in an aerial assault, resulting in significant casualties. According to local health authorities, at least 54 individuals lost their lives and 158 others sustained injuries. Some reports suggest that the number of victims may be even higher.

The attack is attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a militia led by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, commonly referred to as General Hemedti. Daglo previously served as the deputy to Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan, the de facto leader of Sudan. Since April 2023, the two military figures have been embroiled in a violent power struggle, which has displaced more than 12 million people, according to United Nations reports, marking it as one of the largest refugee crises globally. The ongoing civil conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives, leading to widespread hunger affecting half of Sudan's population, with many urgently requiring humanitarian assistance.

A representative from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) remarked on the dire situation, noting that the morgue was overwhelmed with deceased individuals. The organization's Secretary General, Chris Lockyear, was present at the Al-Nao Hospital, which MSF supports, during the attack. He described the scene as heartbreaking, with numerous patients presenting severe injuries, and the emergency department filled with casualties as medical personnel worked tirelessly to provide care.

Recently, the Sudanese military has achieved significant territorial gains in strategically important regions, including areas around Khartoum. However, parts of Omdurman remain under RSF control, which complicates the already volatile situation.

The international community continues to monitor the conflict closely, as the humanitarian crisis escalates. Efforts to mediate peace between the warring factions have so far been unsuccessful, with the violence showing no signs of abating. As the situation develops, calls for urgent humanitarian assistance and intervention to protect civilians grow louder.
