Collapse of Subway Tunnel in South Korea Sparks Search for Missing Worker

Sat 12th Apr, 2025

Rescue teams in South Korea are actively searching for a missing worker following the collapse of a subway tunnel near Seoul. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon at a construction site in Gwangmyeong, a city situated just south of the capital. Eyewitness reports and photos from the scene indicate that the tunnel's collapse caused significant subsidence to the road above it.

Initially, contact was lost with five construction workers at the site. Fortunately, three of the workers were later found unharmed. The rescue operations took a dramatic turn when a crane operator was successfully extracted from approximately 30 meters below ground, over 13 hours post-collapse.

Currently, the focus remains on locating a worker in his fifties who has not yet been accounted for. Rescue operations are being supported by seven search dogs, as teams navigate the challenging conditions of the debris.

Concerns are mounting for the rescue efforts as meteorologists have forecasted thunderstorms and heavy rain in the Seoul area through Sunday morning, potentially hampering the ongoing recovery operations.

In response to the collapse, authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the incident. Reports indicate that just before the tunnel's failure, officials had ordered the evacuation of the surrounding area after cracks were detected in several structural columns. This precautionary measure affected approximately 2,400 residents, most of whom were allowed to return to their homes by midnight. However, around 220 individuals spent the night in temporary shelters.

As the rescue mission continues, the community remains hopeful for the safe return of the missing worker, while officials emphasize the need for thorough safety assessments on construction sites to prevent future tragedies.
