Study Reveals Greater Psychological Impact of Social Media on Teenage Girls

Tue 1st Apr, 2025

A recent investigation conducted by Pompeu Fabra University and the Open University of Catalonia has highlighted significant differences in how teenage girls and boys perceive the psychological effects of popular social media platforms, particularly TikTok and Instagram. The research indicates that girls report a more negative impact on their mental health compared to their male counterparts.

The findings suggest that girls tend to engage more intensely with social media, feeling increased scrutiny regarding their appearance and a heightened need for external validation. This comprehensive study is the first of its kind to quantitatively assess the perceptions of Spanish adolescents regarding the influence of these platforms on various aspects of their social lives.

Led by principal investigators Mònika Jiménez and Mireia Montaña, the research has been published in the journal Revista De Comunicación. The study analyzed responses from a representative sample of 1,043 Spanish adolescents aged 12 to 18, comprising approximately half girls and half boys, with a significant majority being active users of TikTok and Instagram.

Participants evaluated the influence of social media on nine different dimensions of their social lives, rating their experiences from 1 (most negative) to 5 (most positive). The results revealed that the highest-rated aspects included the ability to organize collectively (3.52), the sense of belonging (3.51), and the capacity for self-expression (3.48). However, the only significant gender difference noted was in the realm of psychological well-being.

Regarding psychological well-being, both genders scored low (3.06) for the impact of social media on their communication with close adults. Notably, girls rated this aspect at 2.99, while boys scored slightly higher at 3.13. The study also assessed other dimensions, including socialization, decision-making, and autonomy.

Overall, the adolescents surveyed perceived a neutral impact from these platforms on their lives, with negative effects being counterbalanced by positive experiences. Most participants recognized certain beneficial aspects of social media, such as fostering connections, providing support, and creating opportunities for discussions with peers.

Interestingly, the research indicated that users of Instagram viewed the impact of the platform more favorably, particularly in terms of collective organization and belonging, scoring these aspects at 3.55. TikTok users similarly valued their ability to express themselves, with a score of 3.54. However, the study highlighted concerns about how TikTok's algorithm may reinforce traditional gender stereotypes.

Researchers noted that the content promoted to girls often centers around fashion and beauty, which can adversely affect their body image and self-esteem. Conversely, boys are typically exposed to content related to sports and competitiveness, potentially reinforcing aggressive behaviors associated with toxic masculinity.

The findings underscore the necessity for enhanced emotional education for teenage girls, equipping them with tools to critically evaluate the impact of social media on their lives. While adolescents are generally aware of the effects of these platforms, there remains a need to strengthen their critical thinking skills, especially regarding algorithm-driven content.

In conclusion, the study reveals a pressing need to understand and address the psychological implications of social media on youth, particularly among girls, as they navigate their formative years in an increasingly digital world.
