Sun 13th Apr, 2025
During a recent visit to India, Markus Söder, the leader of the Christian Social Union (CSU) and the Minister-President of Bavaria, advocated for the establishment of a free trade zone between India and Europe, as well as for increasing German arms exports to the country. Following discussions with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in New Delhi, Söder highlighted India's interest in purchasing German military technology, specifically mentioning Taurus cruise missiles and submarines. He emphasized that it is essential for Germany to enhance its partnership with India, a country that currently relies heavily on Russian military equipment, a situation that Western allies are keen to change. Söder pointed out that both the Union and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) have agreed in their coalition contract to adopt more flexible guidelines regarding arms exports. This shift is seen as a way to facilitate the potential increase in defense exports to India. In addition to military cooperation, Söder expressed strong support for a free trade agreement between Europe and India, stressing its importance not only for the arms sector but also for Germany's vital automotive industry. He stated that the establishment of a European-Indian free trade zone should be prioritized and expedited. There is significant interest in fostering partnerships in technology, research, and space exploration, alongside initiatives to enhance academic collaborations and attract skilled professionals from India. Söder proposed implementing a fast-track process for visa and work permit applications for Indian nationals across various sectors. Upon his arrival in New Delhi, Söder was welcomed with a traditional temple ceremony, setting a positive tone for his visit. He indicated his commitment to strengthening ties with India, underscoring that he had coordinated with CDU leader Friedrich Merz and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen prior to his departure. The objective is to send a clear signal to the new German government, which is expected to emerge soon, regarding the desire for a joint free trade zone between Europe and India. Söder's itinerary includes not only political discussions in the capital but also a visit to Karnataka, Bavaria's partner province in southwestern India. The capital city, Bengaluru, often referred to as the Silicon Valley of India, is renowned for its high-tech industry and vibrant shopping scene. Söder expressed confidence that both Bavaria and Germany stand to gain significantly from a new free trade zone. He emphasized the need to provide new signals for free trade amidst the current global trade chaos. Earlier this year, Ursula von der Leyen had also advocated for a free trade agreement with India, aiming for completion by the end of the year, with plans to sign the contract during an upcoming EU-India summit.
