The Social Democratic Party (SPD) is currently engaging its members in a digital vote concerning the coalition agreement with the Union. A key point of contention has emerged regarding the allocation of the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG) to the CDU. Boris Velter, the head of the SPD's working group focused on health policy, has expressed his discontent, labeling this decision as a significant error.

In a communication directed at the members of the SPD's health committee, Velter emphasized that while the coalition deal includes several commendable initiatives, there remains a pressing need for these plans to be effectively transformed into actionable legislation. He pointed out that the shift of crucial decisions regarding contribution rate stability to commissions and working groups presents considerable risks, especially given the failure to secure additional societal funding through tax reforms.

Velter underlined the importance of aligning the new government's health and care policies with the core values of the SPD. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that from a policy perspective, the coalition agreement could be supported. He praised the efforts of the SPD negotiation team, highlighting their rigorous discussions with the Union on health and care issues in the upcoming legislative term.

He noted with approval that the coalition agreement contains specific measures rather than vague commitments. However, he also pointed out the ideological divides that surfaced during negotiations, particularly regarding the balance between personal accountability and collective solidarity in healthcare.

Velter remarked that while the CDU intends to maintain the dual health insurance model, the SPD has core principles that may not align with Union policies. Despite these challenges, he believes that the health and care policy segment of the coalition agreement represents a valuable opportunity to implement meaningful improvements in the daily lives of citizens.

In summary, while the SPD recognizes the potential benefits of the coalition agreement, concerns remain about the implications of CDU leadership in the health ministry, reflecting broader ideological differences between the two parties regarding health policy direction.
