Spargel Harvest Season Kicks Off in Beelitz

Thu 10th Apr, 2025

The much-anticipated spargel (asparagus) harvest has officially commenced in the Beelitz region, known as one of the largest asparagus cultivation areas in Brandenburg. Celebrations were held today at the Syringhof farm, marking the start of the seasonal festivities and the initial harvest of this popular vegetable.

Asparagus lovers can expect to pay between EUR12 and EUR16 per kilogram for locally grown produce, according to Jürgen Jakobs, the chairman of the Beelitz Asparagus Association. The vegetable is primarily cultivated under protective films and is harvested by hand, ensuring its quality and freshness.

Brandenburg, along with Niedersachsen and Bayern, ranks among the key regions for asparagus production in Germany. However, the land dedicated to asparagus cultivation around Beelitz has seen a significant decrease; since 2018, the cultivation area has shrunk by approximately one-third, now totaling around 1,200 hectares. In 2024, the region produced 20,200 tons of asparagus, which is a reduction of 2,000 tons compared to the previous year, as reported by the Office for Statistics.

The asparagus season typically lasts until the feast of St. John on June 24, providing a limited window for consumers to enjoy this seasonal delicacy. Alongside local markets, the asparagus will also be available at various retail chains throughout Berlin and Brandenburg, making it accessible to a wider audience.

As the harvest season progresses, many local farms will engage in various activities to celebrate this beloved vegetable, reinforcing its cultural significance in the region. The arrival of fresh asparagus not only signals the change of seasons but also highlights the importance of local agriculture in sustaining community traditions and providing fresh produce to consumers.
