Spandau Officials Reject Wind Turbines on Rieselfelder

Tue 8th Apr, 2025

The prospect of installing large wind turbines on the Rieselfelder in Berlin-Spandau has sparked considerable debate. The local government has firmly stated that such developments are unacceptable. The city-owned energy provider, Stadtwerke, has proposed to construct between 20 to 30 new wind turbines within the city limits, raising concerns among residents and officials alike.

Among the sites under consideration, three have been highlighted by the energy producers, with one located in Spandau--a sensitive area designated as a nature reserve. Local authorities are particularly concerned about the impact this project could have on the environment and the potential disturbance to local wildlife.

One notable aspect of this proposal is the potential threat to a historic 700-year-old linden tree, which has drawn significant attention and concern regarding its preservation. The tree is considered an important part of the local heritage, and plans that jeopardize its existence are being met with strong opposition.

Officials have indicated that they are prepared to actively resist any efforts to initiate development on these fields. The Stadtwerke has expressed readiness to begin planning immediately to expedite the construction process. The site known as Karolinenhöhe, covering nearly 300 hectares between the village of Gatow and Wilhelmstadt, has been identified as a primary location for these wind turbines.

As discussions continue, the local government is committed to ensuring that community voices are heard in this matter. Plans for public engagement are anticipated to unfold within the year, allowing residents to express their concerns and opinions regarding the proposed wind energy project.
