SpaceX is set to open the launch window for the ninth test flight of its Starship rocket shortly before midnight local time, specifically at 11:30 PM. If everything goes according to plan, a live broadcast will commence 30 minutes prior to launch on the company's website as well as on the social media platform X. This test marks a significant milestone as it will utilize a booster that has previously completed a successful launch.
The booster, classified as a 'Super Heavy', was part of the seventh test flight, where it was successfully recovered after takeoff. However, the upper stage of the rocket experienced a failure shortly after launch, resulting in an explosion just minutes into the flight.
For this upcoming flight, the upper stage is expected to conduct a series of tests during its suborbital journey, including the deployment of a payload for the first time. This payload consists of eight Starlink satellite models, which are designed to disintegrate upon reentry into the Earth's atmosphere. In addition to this, various experiments will be carried out to assess the spacecraft's ability to land safely back on Earth.
Unlike previous tests where the booster was captured post-launch, this time it will be directed to land in the Gulf of Mexico, a region SpaceX refers to as the 'Gulf of America'.
In the lead-up to this flight, SpaceX has clarified the causes behind the premature termination of its last two test flights. Both the seventh and eighth flights experienced engine failures shortly after the separation from the booster, resulting in the loss of vehicle control and subsequent self-destruction. The eighth flight, in particular, suffered from a failure of one of the critical Raptor engines, leading to a cascade of failures. Although SpaceX has not disclosed the specific reasons for these failures, the company has implemented numerous improvements in its systems. The effectiveness of these changes will be evaluated during the upcoming test.
