Rescue Efforts Uncover Bodies and Survivors in South African Gold Mine
In a tragic development, South African authorities have reported the recovery of 60 bodies from an abandoned gold mine, with ongoing operations aimed at locating additional individuals who may still be trapped underground. Over the past two days, rescue teams successfully retrieved 106 survivors, who were subsequently arrested for illegal mining activities.
According to police reports, the initial recovery operations led to the identification of 51 deceased individuals, with nine bodies extracted the previous day. The exact number of miners still believed to be inside the mine remains uncertain, but estimates suggest that hundreds could still be trapped within the site.
The abandoned mine, located near Stilfontein--approximately 140 kilometers southwest of Johannesburg--has attracted many miners, particularly from neighboring countries, seeking to extract remaining gold deposits. Since August, when rescue operations commenced, a total of 1,576 individuals have been safely removed from the mine.
Efforts to force illegal miners out of the site included cutting off access to essential resources such as food and water. However, a court ruling in November halted these restrictions, complicating the rescue operations.
Rescue efforts have involved utilizing a metal cage to lower personnel into the mine shaft, which extends more than two kilometers underground. Authorities are committed to continuing these operations over the coming days to ensure all individuals are accounted for.
Illegal mining is a prevalent issue in South Africa, particularly in abandoned mines where large-scale operations have ceased to be financially viable. Minerals Minister Gwede Mantashe highlighted the systemic nature of the problem, stating that the miners themselves are not the primary beneficiaries of the illegal gold trade. He emphasized that those profiting from these activities must be held accountable for the associated risks.
South Africa is home to some of the deepest gold mines globally, many extending several kilometers into the earth. The situation underscores the dangers faced by individuals engaging in illegal mining, as well as the broader implications for safety and regulation within the mining sector.
