Sony Halts Sales of Most Projectors in Europe Amid EU Sanctions

Wed 26th Mar, 2025

Sony has announced a suspension of sales for nearly all of its home theater projectors and certain installation models across Europe. This decision is a direct response to EU sanctions that affect companies supplying the Russian military. The sanctions target businesses that are believed to contribute, either directly or indirectly, to the ongoing military actions in Ukraine.

While Sony is not directly sanctioned, the company relies on a third-party manufacturer that is on the EU sanctions list. As a result, the majority of its consumer projector lineup will no longer be available in the European market. The only exception is the high-end model VPL-GTZ380, which will continue to be sold, with a starting price of EUR79,200. All other consumer-focused models, including the recently launched Bravia 9 (VPL-XW8100) and Bravia 8 (VPL-XW6100), will be withdrawn from the market.

Retailers are now permitted only to sell their remaining stock without introducing new inventory into the European Union. In a statement, Sony emphasized their commitment to adhering to current laws and regulations, including the latest European export control measures and trade restrictions.

Reports indicate that a supplier involved in the production of Sony's projectors is listed under EU sanctions, specifically Qisda, a Taiwanese company that manufactures projectors and other components. This situation may also extend to other brands, such as BenQ, which is associated with Qisda. Due to patent regulations, Sony may face challenges in relocating its production to alternative manufacturers.

As the geopolitical landscape continues to evolve, companies like Sony are compelled to navigate complex legal frameworks that impact their operations in various regions. The situation highlights the broader implications of international sanctions on technology and consumer goods.
