Sony has announced the launch of two new lenses designed for full-frame E-mount cameras, adding to its extensive portfolio of optical solutions. The newly introduced FE 16mm F1.8 G and FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS lenses cater to diverse photographic needs, offering high resolution and specialized features.

FE 16mm F1.8 G: A Compact Ultra-Wide Angle Lens

The FE 16mm F1.8 G lens is engineered for ultra-wide angle photography, boasting a maximum aperture of f/1.8. This lens provides impressive resolution and a visually appealing bokeh effect, enhanced by an eleven-blade circular diaphragm. Advanced optical design includes two Advanced Aspherical (AA) elements, which help minimize distortion and aberrations, alongside a Super-ED glass element and three ED elements to combat chromatic aberrations. With 15 elements arranged in 12 groups, this lens is well-suited for dynamic wide-angle photography. Its close focusing distance of 15 centimeters allows for creative shooting perspectives.

Weighing in at just 304 grams and measuring 73.8 mm in diameter and 75 mm in length, the lens is both lightweight and compact. It features a fast and precise autofocus system powered by dual XD linear motors, ensuring quiet and smooth operation. For videographers, the lens incorporates a reduced focus breathing function, enabling seamless focus transitions. A clickless aperture ring can be activated or deactivated via a dedicated switch, allowing for smooth exposure adjustments during shooting.

Additionally, the lens supports 67mm filter threads and is designed to balance well on gimbals. It is also weather-sealed to withstand dust and moisture, making it a reliable option for various shooting conditions. The customizable focus hold button can be programmed to different functions via the camera.

FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS: A Versatile Super-Telephoto Zoom Lens

The FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS lens marks Sony's first G lens featuring a super-telephoto zoom range of up to 800mm. This lens is designed for high-resolution imaging across its entire zoom range, delivering a natural bokeh effect. The optical design includes six ED glass elements to minimize color fringing, while an eleven-blade circular aperture contributes to its smooth bokeh.

The lens employs an internal zoom mechanism that maintains its length during zooming, enhancing stability during handheld shooting. It is compatible with 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters, extending its range up to 1600mm, although this results in a maximum aperture of f/16 at the longest focal length.

Featuring dual linear motors, the autofocus system is designed for rapid and accurate performance, capable of keeping up with the Alpha 9 III's high-speed burst shooting of 120 frames per second. The integrated optical SteadyShot image stabilization aids in reducing blur from camera shake during handheld photography. Similar to the ultra-wide lens, this model also includes breathing compensation to mitigate unwanted image shifts during focus adjustments.

With dimensions of 120 mm in diameter and 346 mm in length, and a weight of 2475 grams, this super-telephoto lens is substantial but manageable due to its f/6.3 to f/8.0 aperture range, depending on the chosen focal length. An adjustable tripod collar provides balanced weight distribution during use, and numerous seals make the lens resistant to dust and moisture. The lens includes three focus hold buttons that can be reassigned through the camera's menu.

Availability and Pricing

The FE 16mm F1.8 G lens is expected to be available starting in April 2025 with a retail price of EUR1000, while the FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS is set to launch in March 2025 at a price point of EUR3000.
