Severe Weather Hits Thuringia: Hailstones Fall Over Easter

Mon 21st Apr, 2025

Thuringia, Germany - Meteorologists had issued warnings for severe weather conditions coinciding with the Easter holiday, and those predictions came to fruition as intense thunderstorms swept through the region. In some areas, hailstones fell from the sky, abruptly altering the cheerful spring atmosphere associated with the holiday.

On Easter Sunday, the German Weather Service (DWD) had forecasted maximum temperatures ranging from 19 to 22 degrees Celsius, but also anticipated localized showers accompanied by heavy thunderstorms later in the day. The warnings proved accurate as Thuringia experienced a sudden shift from pleasant weather to winter-like conditions.

One of the hardest-hit areas was Dingelstädt in the Eichsfeld district, where a powerful hailstorm returned a wintry feel to the landscape. The hailstones, described as resembling eggs, blanketed cars, sidewalks, and roads with a thick layer of ice, transforming what were once green lawns into a stark white scene.

The hail's intensity unfortunately led to damage in local gardens, particularly affecting young tulips. Fortunately, there were no reports of significant destruction beyond this.

Prior to the storms, the DWD had cautioned residents about potential severe weather, including heavy rain, strong winds, and hail. The forecast indicated that after a period of dryness, Easter Sunday could bring thunderstorms and substantial rainfall.

This series of weather events has not been isolated to Thuringia; other regions in Europe have faced their share of tumultuous weather. Reports from Italy indicated severe conditions, including fallen trees, washed-out roads, and homes submerged in water due to heavy rainfall.

As the weather system continues to develop, residents are advised to stay informed through official weather updates and heed any safety warnings issued by local authorities.
