Severe Cold Snap Expected in Germany with Temperatures Plummeting to -15 Degrees

Germany is bracing for a significant drop in temperatures as forecasts predict that overnight lows could reach as low as -15 degrees Celsius. The cold snap is expected to begin on Sunday night, following a day marked by scattered snow showers in various regions.

On Saturday, the weather across the country will be relatively dry, except for some light snow anticipated in northern and eastern areas. The German Weather Service (DWD) has warned that parts of the east and south, as well as the mountainous regions, may experience persistent frost. Overall, daytime temperatures are likely to hover between 0 and 4 degrees Celsius.

As night falls on Sunday, snow showers are predicted to move from the Baltic Sea into northeastern Germany. Meanwhile, areas from Rhineland-Palatinate to Lower Franconia may also see localized light snowfall. The DWD indicates that overnight temperatures will drop to between -1 and -8 degrees, with some locations potentially experiencing severe frost, dropping below -10 degrees.

Sunday's weather is expected to be predominantly overcast with occasional breaks of sunshine, and light snow may fall in certain regions. Generally, the majority of the country will remain dry, although light frost is expected in the northeastern parts. In the southwest, temperatures will range from -1 to +5 degrees, with the warmest readings likely near the Rhine and Moselle rivers.

As the new week begins, temperatures could plummet even further, with some areas possibly experiencing lows of -15 degrees Celsius. The DWD forecasts that Monday will remain mostly dry, with daytime highs expected to be between -4 and 0 degrees in the east and north, while the rest of the country may see temperatures ranging from -1 to +5 degrees.
