Search Operation Underway for Missing Aircraft with Ten People in Alaska

Fri 7th Feb, 2025

A search and rescue operation is currently active in Alaska for an aircraft reported missing with ten individuals onboard. The plane, identified as a Cessna Caravan, disappeared on Thursday while en route from Unalakleet to Nome, approximately 250 kilometers away, according to local authorities.

The aircraft was carrying nine passengers in addition to the pilot. As of now, the identities of those onboard have not been disclosed. Authorities are working diligently to track the last known coordinates of the aircraft, which is believed to have vanished from radar about 20 kilometers off the coast.

Search efforts are being conducted both on the ground and from the air, with the Coast Guard deploying an aircraft to assist in the operation. However, adverse weather conditions are complicating the search efforts significantly.

The local fire chief in White Mountain expressed hope that the missing aircraft might have landed safely on land rather than in the ocean, which would present a more dire scenario for those onboard.

This incident marks the third aviation emergency in the United States within a short span of time. Just days prior, on January 29, a passenger plane operated by American Airlines collided with a military helicopter during its landing approach in Washington, D.C. Tragically, all 64 individuals aboard the passenger flight and the three crew members of the helicopter lost their lives.

In a separate incident just two days later, a medical transport jet crashed in a densely populated area of Philadelphia, resulting in the deaths of all six people aboard, as well as one additional casualty on the ground, with several others injured.

The ongoing search for the missing aircraft in Alaska highlights the urgent need for thorough and efficient rescue operations in challenging environments.
