SC Potsdam Faces Mixed Emotions After Quarterfinal Exit in Volleyball Bundesliga

Sun 30th Mar, 2025

The SC Potsdam volleyball team has found itself at a crossroads following its elimination from the quarterfinals of the Bundesliga playoffs. After a disappointing 1:3 loss to VfB Suhl, the team concluded the series 0:2, marking the first time since 2018 that they have failed to advance to the final four.

Eugen Benzel, the club's managing director, expressed the team's frustration over the loss but also highlighted the achievements made under challenging circumstances. Despite the setback, he noted that with a bit of reflection, the team could take pride in their performance throughout the season.

This season was particularly tumultuous for SC Potsdam, which faced financial difficulties that put their league license in jeopardy. The club was only able to solidify its financial situation shortly before the season began, leading to the rapid assembly of a new roster on a limited budget. Despite these struggles, the team managed to reach the semifinals of the European Challenge Cup and maintained a competitive position in the league.

However, significant changes are on the horizon for the team. Reports indicate that three key players--libero Yurika Bamba, attacker Eleanor Holthaus, and middle blocker Anna Koulberg--are set to transfer to MTV Stuttgart. Additionally, head coach Riccardo Boieri will be departing to take a position at Mladost Zagreb, leading to the appointment of Vladimir Kapris from Rapid Bucharest as his successor.

With the end of the season, SC Potsdam now faces the challenge of rebuilding and re-strategizing for the future. As they reflect on the past year's journey, the club aims to emerge stronger and more unified for the next season.
