Tragedy Strikes as Roof Collapses at Santo Domingo Disco, Leaving Many Dead

A festive Merengue concert in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, turned into a tragedy as the roof of the Jet Set nightclub collapsed, resulting in a catastrophic loss of life. The death toll has risen to at least 79, with over 155 individuals reported injured, according to government officials from the Caribbean nation.

The incident occurred while attendees were enjoying a performance by prominent Merengue singer Rubby Pérez. Initial investigations into the cause of the roof's collapse are still ongoing, with reports suggesting that Pérez himself may have been among the victims, although this has not yet been officially confirmed by authorities.

Antonio Espaillat, the owner of the nightclub, expressed his profound sorrow in a video message directed to the victims' families, acknowledging the devastation caused by the incident. His heartfelt message conveyed a sense of shared grief within the community.

Among the casualties was Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Montecristi, who was remembered fondly by her brother, Major League Baseball player Nelson Cruz, in an emotional tribute on social media. He highlighted her dedication to her constituents and the impact of her loss.

Emergency services, including over 300 personnel, have been tirelessly working to search for survivors beneath the rubble. Utilizing heat detection technology, rescuers remain hopeful, as there are signs suggesting that some individuals may still be trapped but alive.

In support of the victims, many community members have come forward to donate blood for those injured in the disaster.

President Luis Abinader visited the site of the tragedy, expressing his condolences and emphasizing the government's commitment to providing necessary support to rescue operations. He took to social media to share his sorrow and to assure the families of the victims that they are in the thoughts and prayers of the nation.
